Introduction To Living Healthy

On this WebQuest we will be learner not only the importance of leading a healthy life but also how to lead one with ease. We will take a look at your lifestyle the way it is right now and change it slightly for only two weeks and see how much difference it will make. You will learn about your BMI (Body Mass Index) and what different fun activities you can participate in to keep you healthy and in good shape. After this WebQuest you will know what foods to try to stay away from and which foods to try to eat more of. This project is going to get you started off living your new healthy lifestyle on the right foot so you can look fit and feel healthy.

Finding Your BMI

The first step is finding your body mass index or BMI. Your BMI will tell you what kind of shape your body is in right now according to your height and weight. To find your BMI follow these steps.

To Find Your Height
1. Find a partner to help measure you.
2. Take your shoes off and stand on a hard floor against a flat surface such as a wall.
3. While you are standing straight, with your feet together and your back against the have your partner place a flat object like a book on the top of your head and against the wall and make a light mark on the wall.
4. Carefully measure from the ground to the mark on the wall with a tape measurer in feet and inches your height.
5. Write down your results and plug them into the BMI calculator when you finish.
To Find Your Weight
1. Use a digital scale. Avoid using bathroom scales that are spring-loaded. Place the scale on firm flooring (such as tile or wood) rather than carpet.
2. Have the child or teen remove shoes and heavy clothing, such as sweaters.
3. Have the child or teen stand with both feet in the center of the scale.Then enter your birth date, your gender, your height and weight where it says to on this BMI calculator.

Eating Healthy

Go to this website about nutrition and come up with a plan and choose some healthy foods that you like that you can eat instead of some of the bad foods that you eat now. Write a list of the different foods and find a diet that you can stick to.The Food Guide

Fun Physical Activities

Inquiry

1. Look at the first website and find your BMI and look at the second two websites and find healthy alternatives to certain foods and fun physical activities to replace T.V. And video games.

2. For the next to weeks keep a log of all the foods you eat and what physical activities you do and when you do them. Have a parent or a supervisor of some sort verify that you have in fact done what you say you have done.

3. After two weeks have past and you have been eating healthier and more active remeasure yourself and enter your information into the BMI calculator and see if any changes have occurred. Also, right down whether you feel different, better or worse, after living your new healthy lifestyle.

4. Turn in your log that you have created that contains all you information on all you have eaten and all the physical activities you have participated in the past two weeks, the results you got from your new lifestyle and turn it in.

5. Now you know how to lead a healthy lifestyle. Keep up the good work.

Teachers Help

1. This intended audience for this WebQuest is fifth or sixth graders.

2. Students will learn the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and some easy ways they can accomplish it.

3. Students will need to be reminded to be on there best behavior on the internet and stay on track.

4. The students will not need to much time on computers and the inter net. They will only need one hour to get their project underway and one hour two weeks later to wrap it up.

5. When grading this project you need to look at how thorough the students log is and look to see that they made an effort to try to make a change in their lifestyle. Also, Make sure that an adult has signed their log verifying that they did the activities and did not just write in some good food they ate and activities they did.
